Fairy Houses & Gnome Homes, an annual event at Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park, has been awarded “Outstanding Event of 2017” by the South Central Region of the National Association for Interpretation (NAI).
Fairy Houses & Gnome Homes is a festival style event where participants choose or gather natural materials to build miniature homes for magical creatures that live in the forest.
Activities at the event highlight everyday magic in the forest and are designed to inspire, educate, and give families lots of reasons to come, stay, and explore the forest. Guests are invited to “create whimsical homes for “forest friends”. From huts to hammocks, participants are encouraged to let their imagination run wild. At the event, each individual has to option to take their creation home or build in the forest and leave it for the fairies and gnomes to “move into”. This event inspires and invites people to experience an encounter with nature in a way that may be new and out of the ordinary.
The Parish’s first Fairy Houses & Gnome Home event in 2015 started with 40 in attendance and has grown to over 500 participants.
Interpreters connect visitors to important natural, cultural, and historical resources at parks, nature centers, historical sites, aquariums, zoos, and anywhere that people come to learn about places. NAI defines interpretation as "a mission-based communication process that forges emotional and intellectual connections between the interests of the audience and the meanings inherent in the resource."
The South Central Region consists of LA, TX, OK, KS, MO, and AR and has more than 750 interpreters from both public and private sectors.
The 2018 Fairy Houses & Gnome House will be held on Saturday, April 7 from 11:00am – 4:00pm at Walter B. Jacobs Nature Park, 8012 Blanchard Furrh Road, Shreveport, LA 71107. The event is free and open to public. All children and adults are welcome to attend.
